On Sunday, July 6, 2025, Joshua Meng hosted the Pearland volunteer chess lesson. The students were introduced to basic chess concepts, such as the knight fork and tactical awareness in a position. They learned to recognize different types of basic checkmates. Additionally, they observed that even a seemingly equal position can be suddenly changed with a few well-timed moves. They reviewed an expert game and learned how to play “positionally”. Afterwards, the students had the opportunity to play against their peers and apply what they had learned.
Pearland volunteers provided the community with an opportunity to learn about the wonders of chess while having fun, allowing them to practice concepts they had learned, gain knowledge, and improve their overall gameplay.
